Horned Frogs hold off Horns, 3-1, in openerTexas Christian tops in-state rivals
TCU freshman lefty Matt Purke has been phenomenal all season and his spectacular first campaign in Fort Worth continued on Friday afternoon when he pitched the No. 5 Horned Frogs to a 3-1 victory over second-ranked Texas at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. The Horned Frogs (50-11) took a 1-0 lead in the second. Matt Curry and Joe Weik started the frame with back-to-back singles. After Jantzen Witte bunted them into scoring position, Aaron Schultz plated Curry with a sacrifice fly to right. It remained 1-0 until the sixth when TCU tacked on two more. The Horned Frogs added that pair of runs on just one hit. Leadoff batter Taylor Featherston was plunked and Bryan Holaday drew a walk. Jason Coats proceeded to lay down the sacrifice bunt to move the duo up. Featherston scored on a wild pitch and Joe Weik’s sac fly plated Holaday. Three runs would prove to be more than enough for the Horned Frogs’ Purke.

The sensational southpaw, which was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2009 draft, struck out 11 in 7.2 innings of work. He improved his record to a perfect 14-0 with the win. Texas (49-12) tallied its only run in the seventh when Kevin Keyes connected on a solo shot with two down to pull the Longhorns within 3-1. Cole Green (11-2) surrendered just three runs—all earned—on five hits in his 5.2 innings for Texas, but was the tough luck loser and suffered just his second loss of the season. Thomas Stayton allowed just two hits in his 3.1 innings of shutout relief, but the Longhorns couldn’t muster any offense against Purke and company. TCU third baseman Jantzen Witte led the Horned Frogs with his 2-of-3 effort. The Super Regional will continue on Saturday with Texas facing a must-win situation.
