TCU tops Texas, 4-1, to punch ticket for Omaha

Horned Frogs headed to first ever College World Series

With a chance to earn it’s first-ever trip to the College World Series, No. 5 TCU received 7.2 scoreless innings from Kyle Winkler and the Horned Frogs hung a 4-1 season-ending loss on the second-ranked Longhorns.

The Horned Frogs (51-12) and Longhorns (50-13) were scoreless through four, but TCU took a lead that it wouldn’t relinquish in the fifth.

Taylor Featherston led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a throwing error. Jason Coats followed with a single to score him.

TCU tacked on two in the seventh on a homer by Aaron Schultz and Bryan Holaday added another with a solo shot in the eighth.

Texas had some opportunites against Winkler, but they weren’t able to take advantage. The Longhorns left six runners on in the first four innings and ten for the game.

The Longhorns logged their only run—an unearned one—in the ninth off Horned Frogs’ reliever Tyler Lockwood. However, Lockwood escaped without further damage to notch his seventh save.

Winkler improved to 12-1 with the victory while Texas’ Brandon Workman dropped to 12-2 with the loss. He allowed just a single run on four hits in five innings.

TCU will meet Florida State in its first-ever game in Omaha.
